Al-Quran

1

وَٱلْعَصْرِ

By the time

اِنَّ الْاِنْسَانَ لَفِيْ خُسْرٍۙ

man is in a state of loss indeed,

اِلَّا الَّذِيْنَ اٰمَنُوْا وَعَمِلُوا الصّٰلِحٰتِ وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالْحَقِّ ەۙ وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالصَّبْرِ ࣖ(العصر:٣)

except those who believed and did righteous deeds, and exhorted each other to follow truth, and exhorted each other to observe patience.

The Holy  Quran emphasizes the importance of time in the life of a Muslim. Allah swears at the beginning of many Soorahs (Chapters) by time or moments in time, for example:-

وَالْفَجْرِۙ  وَلَيَالٍ عَشْرٍۙ (الفجر:٢)

“By the dawn and the ten nights (i.e. the first ten days of the month of Thul-Hijjah)...”[Quran 89: 1-2]

وَالَّيْلِ اِذَا يَغْشٰىۙ وَالنَّهَارِ اِذَا تَجَلّٰىۙ(الليل:٢)

I swear by the night when it covers (the sun), and by the day when it unveils itself,

وَالضُّحٰىۙ وَالَّيْلِ اِذَا سَجٰىۙ(الضحى:٢) 

I swear By the morning brightness .And [by] the night when it covers with darkness, (Ad-Duhaa [93] : 2)

وَاللَّيْلِ إِذْ أَدْبَرَ. وَالصُّبْحِ إِذَا أَسْفَرَ

And by the night when it departs, and by the morning when it brightens

(Surah Al-Muddaththir, 74:33-34)

۞ يٰٓاَيُّهَا الَّذِيْنَ اٰمَنُوْٓا اَطِيْعُوا اللّٰهَ وَاَطِيْعُوا الرَّسُوْلَ وَلَا تُبْطِلُوْٓا اَعْمَالَكُمْ(محمد:٣٣)

O you who have believed, obey Allah and obey the Messenger and do not invalidate your deeds. (Muhammad [47] : 33)

قٰلَ كَمْ لَبِثْتُمْ فِى الْاَرْضِ عَدَدَ سِنِيْنَ(المؤمنون:١١٢)

He (Allah) will say (to unbelievers), “How long did you stay on the earth by number of years?”

قَالُوْا لَبِثْنَا يَوْمًا اَوْ بَعْضَ يَوْمٍ فَسْـَٔلِ الْعَاۤدِّيْنَ (المؤمنون:١١٣)

They will say, “We stayed for a day or for a part of a day. So, ask those (angels) who have (exact) calculation.”

قٰلَ اِنْ لَّبِثْتُمْ اِلَّا قَلِيْلًا لَّوْ اَنَّكُمْ كُنْتُمْ تَعْلَمُوْنَ(المؤمنون:١١٤)

He will say, “You did not stay but for a little. Would that you had understood (this at that time)!

حَتّٰٓى اِذَا جَاۤءَ اَحَدَهُمُ الْمَوْتُ قَالَ رَبِّ ارْجِعُوْنِ ۙ(المؤمنون:٩٩)

[For such is the state of the disbelievers] until, when death comes to one of them, he says, "My Lord, send me back. (Al-Mu'minun [23] : 99)

لَعَلِّيْٓ اَعْمَلُ صَالِحًا فِيْمَا تَرَكْتُ كَلَّاۗ اِنَّهَا كَلِمَةٌ هُوَ قَاۤىِٕلُهَاۗ وَمِنْ وَّرَاۤىِٕهِمْ بَرْزَخٌ اِلٰى يَوْمِ يُبْعَثُوْنَ (المؤمنون:١٠٠)

so that I may act righteously in that (world) which I have left behind.” Never! It is simply a word he utters, and in front of such people there is a barrier till the day when they will be resurrected.

like wise 

وَهُمْ يَصْطَرِخُوْنَ فِيْهَاۚ رَبَّنَآ اَخْرِجْنَا نَعْمَلْ صَالِحًا غَيْرَ الَّذِيْ كُنَّا نَعْمَلُۗ اَوَلَمْ نُعَمِّرْكُمْ مَّا يَتَذَكَّرُ فِيْهِ مَنْ تَذَكَّرَ وَجَاۤءَكُمُ النَّذِيْرُۗ فَذُوْقُوْا فَمَا لِلظّٰلِمِيْنَ مِنْ نَّصِيْرٍ (فاطر:٣٧)

And they will be crying therein, “Our Lord, take us out (from here), and we will act righteously, not in the way we have been doing before.” (Allah will say to them,) “Did We not give you an age in your life in which lesson could have been learnt by the one who wished to take lesson? And (furthermore) the warner had (also) come to you. So, have a taste, because the wrongdoers will have no supporter.

like wise

وَاَنْفِقُوْا مِنْ مَّا رَزَقْنٰكُمْ مِّنْ قَبْلِ اَنْ يَّأْتِيَ اَحَدَكُمُ الْمَوْتُ فَيَقُوْلَ رَبِّ لَوْلَآ اَخَّرْتَنِيْٓ اِلٰٓى اَجَلٍ قَرِيْبٍۚ فَاَصَّدَّقَ وَاَكُنْ مِّنَ الصّٰلِحِيْنَ (المنافقون:١٠)

And spend out of what We have given to you before death overtakes one of you and he says, “My Lord, would you not give me respite to a near term, so that I should pay Sadaqah (alms) and become one of the righteous?”

like wise

وَلَوْ تَرٰىٓ اِذِ الْمُجْرِمُوْنَ نَاكِسُوْا رُءُوْسِهِمْ عِنْدَ رَبِّهِمْۗ رَبَّنَآ اَبْصَرْنَا وَسَمِعْنَا فَارْجِعْنَا نَعْمَلْ صَالِحًا اِنَّا مُوْقِنُوْنَ (السجدة:١٢)

If you could but see when the criminals are hanging their heads before their Lord, [saying], "Our Lord, we have seen and heard, so return us [to the world]; we will work righteousness. Indeed, we are [now] certain." (As-Sajdah [32] : 12)

5

يٰٓاَيُّهَا الَّذِيْنَ اٰمَنُوا اتَّقُوا اللّٰهَ وَلْتَنْظُرْ نَفْسٌ مَّا قَدَّمَتْ لِغَدٍۚ وَاتَّقُوا اللّٰهَ ۗاِنَّ اللّٰهَ خَبِيْرٌ ۢبِمَا تَعْمَلُوْنَ (الحشر:١٨)

O you who believe, fear Allah, and everybody must consider what he (or she) has sent ahead for tomorrow. And fear Allah. Surely Allah is fully aware of what you do.

6

يَقُوْلُ يٰلَيْتَنِيْ قَدَّمْتُ لِحَيَاتِيْۚ(الفجر:٢٤)

He will say, “O Would that I had sent ahead (some good deeds) for (this) my life!”

7

وَيَوْمَ يَعَضُّ الظَّالِمُ عَلٰى يَدَيْهِ يَقُوْلُ يٰلَيْتَنِى اتَّخَذْتُ مَعَ الرَّسُوْلِ سَبِيْلًا (الفرقان:٢٧)

And (Be mindful of) the Day the wrongdoer will bite his hands saying, “Would that I had taken a path along with the messenger!

يٰوَيْلَتٰى لَيْتَنِيْ لَمْ اَتَّخِذْ فُلَانًا خَلِيْلًا (الفرقان:٢٨)

Woe to me! Would that I had not taken so-and-so for my friend!

لَقَدْ اَضَلَّنِيْ عَنِ الذِّكْرِ بَعْدَ اِذْ جَاۤءَنِيْۗ وَكَانَ الشَّيْطٰنُ لِلْاِنْسَانِ خَذُوْلًا (الفرقان:٢٩)

Indeed he led me astray from the advice after it had come to me.” And the Satan is man’s betrayer.

وَقَالَ الرَّسُوْلُ يٰرَبِّ اِنَّ قَوْمِى اتَّخَذُوْا هٰذَا الْقُرْاٰنَ مَهْجُوْرًا (الفرقان:٣٠)

And the messenger will say, “O my Lord, my people had taken this Qur’ān as deserted.”

8

إِنَّ الصَّلَاةَ كَانَتْ عَلَى الْمُؤْمِنِينَ كِتَابًا مَوْقُوتًا

"Surely the Salat at fixed hours (of the day and night) has been enjoined upon the believers." (Surah an-Nisa,4:103)

Note: Time is very precious; if it goes by, you cannot make use of it again. YESTERDAY can never become TOMORROW. A time that has passed will never come back again.

Al-Hadith

1

عَنْ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَ قَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ

نِعْمَتَانِ مَغْبُونٌ فِيهِمَا كَثِيرٌ مِنْ النَّاسِ الصِّحَّةُ وَالْفَرَاغُ

Ibn Abbas reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “There are two blessings which many people waste: health and free time.”

عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ عَبَسَةَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ

مَنْ شَابَ شَيْبَةً فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ كَانَتْ لَهُ نُورًا يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ

Amr ibn ‘Abasah reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Whoever has grown a gray hair in the way of Allah, it will be a light for him on the Day of Resurrection.”

عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ

اغْتَنِمْ خَمْسًا قَبْلَ خَمْسٍ

شَبَابَكَ قَبْلَ هَرَمِكَ وَصِحَّتَكَ قَبْلَ سَقَمِكَ

وَغِنَاكَ قَبْلَ فَقْرِكَ وَفَرَاغَكَ قَبْلَ شُغُلِكَ وَحَيَاتَكَ قَبْلَ مَوْتِكَ

9767 شعب الإيمان للبيهقي الزهد وقصر الأمل

Ibn Abbas reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Take advantage of five before five: your youth before your old age, your health before your illness, your riches before your poverty, your free timebefore your work, and your life before your death.”

عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ

يُؤْذِينِي ابْنُ آدَمَ يَسُبُّ الدَّهْرَ وَأَنَا الدَّهْرُ بِيَدِي الْأَمْرُ أُقَلِّبُ اللَّيْلَ وَالنَّهَارَ

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Allah Almighty said: The son of Adam abuses me. He curses time and I am time, for in my hand are the night and day.”

عَنْ ابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ عَنْ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ

لَا تَزُولُ قَدَمُ ابْنِ آدَمَ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ مِنْ عِنْدِ رَبِّهِ حَتَّى يُسْأَلَ عَنْ خَمْسٍ

عَنْ عُمُرِهِ فِيمَ أَفْنَاهُ وَعَنْ شَبَابِهِ فِيمَ أَبْلَاهُ وَمَالِهِ

مِنْ أَيْنَ اكْتَسَبَهُ وَفِيمَ أَنْفَقَهُ وَمَاذَا عَمِلَ فِيمَا عَلِمَ

Ibn Mas’ud reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “The son of Adam will not be dismissed from his Lord on the Day of Resurrection until he is questioned about five matters: his life and how he lived it, his youth and how he expended it, his wealth and how he earned it and he spent it, and how he acted upon his knowledge.”

عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَر قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ

كُنْ فِي الدُّنْيَا كَأَنَّكَ غَرِيبٌ أَوْ عَابِرُ سَبِيلٍ

وَكَانَ ابْنُ عُمَرَ يَقُولُ

إِذَا أَمْسَيْتَ فَلاَ تَنْتَظِرِ الصَّبَاحَ وَإِذَا أَصْبَحْتَ فَلاَ تَنْتَظِرِ الْمَسَاءَ

وَخُذْ مِنْ صِحَّتِكَ لِمَرَضِكَ وَمِنْ حَيَاتِكَ لِمَوْتِكَ

6416 صحيح البخاري كتاب الرقاق باب قول النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم كن في الدنيا كأنك غريب أو عابر سبيل

Ibn Umar reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Be in this world as if you were a stranger or a traveler along a path.” Ibn Umar would say, “If you make it to the evening, do not wait for the morning. If you make it to the morning, do not wait for the evening. Take from your health for your sickness, and from your life for your death.”

عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ حُسَيْنٍ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ

إِنَّ مِنْ حُسْنِ إِسْلَامِ الْمَرْءِ تَرْكَهُ مَا لَا يَعْنِيهِ

‘Ali ibn Husayn reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Verily, among excellence in Islam is for a man to leave what does not concern him.”

عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرَةَ أَنَّ رَجُلًا قَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَيُّ النَّاسِ خَيْرٌ قَالَ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ

مَنْ طَالَ عُمُرُهُ وَحَسُنَ عَمَلُهُ

قَالَ فَأَيُّ النَّاسِ شَرٌّ قَالَ

مَنْ طَالَ عُمُرُهُ وَسَاءَ عَمَلُهُ

Abu Bakrah reported: A man said, “O Messenger of Allah, which of the people are best?” The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “One whose life is long and his deeds are good.” The man said, “Which of the people are worst?” The Prophet said, “One whose life is long and his deeds are evil.”

عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ

لَا يَتَمَنَّى أَحَدُكُمُ الْمَوْتَ وَلَا يَدْعُ بِهِ مِنْ قَبْلِ أَنْ يَأْتِيَهُ

إِنَّهُ إِذَا مَاتَ أَحَدُكُمُ انْقَطَعَ عَمَلُهُ وَإِنَّهُ لَا يَزِيدُ الْمُؤْمِنَ عُمْرُهُ إِلَّا خَيْرًا

2682 صحيح مسلم كتاب الذكر والدعاء والتوبة والاستغفار باب كراهة تمني الموت لضر نزل به

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Let none of you wish for death, nor call for it before its time comes. When one of you dies, his deeds come to an end. Verily, the life of a believer only increases in good.”

Another Narration

عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ

لَا يَتَمَنَّيَنَّ أَحَدُكُمْ الْمَوْتَ مِنْ ضُرٍّ أَصَابَهُ فَإِنْ كَانَ لَا بُدَّ فَاعِلًا فَلْيَقُلْ

اللَّهُمَّ أَحْيِنِي مَا كَانَتْ الْحَيَاةُ خَيْرًا لِي وَتَوَفَّنِي إِذَا كَانَتْ الْوَفَاةُ خَيْرًا لِي

5671 صحيح البخاري كتاب الأشربة باب تمني المريض الموت

2680 صحيح مسلم كتاب الذكر والدعاء والتوبة والاستغفار باب كراهة تمني الموت لضر نزل به

Anas ibn Malik reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “None of you should wish for death due to a calamity that has afflicted him. Yet if he must do something, let him say: O Allah, keep me alive so long as life is good for me, and cause me to die if death is better for me.”

قَالَ سَأَلْتُ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم

أَىُّ الْعَمَلِ أَحَبُّ إِلَى اللَّهِ قَالَ

‏"‏ الصَّلاَةُ عَلَى وَقْتِهَا ‏"‏‏

.‏ قَالَ ثُمَّ أَىُّ قَالَ ‏"‏ ثُمَّ بِرُّ الْوَالِدَيْنِ ‏"‏‏.

‏ قَالَ ثُمَّ أَىُّ قَالَ ‏"‏ الْجِهَادُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ ‏"‏‏

.‏ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي بِهِنَّ وَلَوِ اسْتَزَدْتُهُ لَزَادَنِي‏.‏

Sahih al-Bukhari 527

I asked the Prophet (ﷺ) "Which deed is the dearest to Allah?" He replied, "To offer the prayers at their early stated fixed times." I asked, "What is the next (in goodness)?" He replied, "To be good and dutiful to your parents" I again asked, "What is the next (in goodness)?" He replied, 'To participate in Jihad (religious fighting) in Allah's cause." `Abdullah added, "I asked only that much and if I had asked more, the Prophet (ﷺ) would have told me more."

عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ

لاَ تَقُومُ السَّاعَةُ حَتَّى يَتَقَارَبَ الزَّمَانُ فَتَكُونُ السَّنَةُ كَالشَّهْرِ وَالشَّهْرُ كَالْجُمُعَةِ

وَتَكُونُ الْجُمُعَةُ كَالْيَوْمِ وَيَكُونُ الْيَوْمُ كَالسَّاعَةِ وَتَكُونُ السَّاعَةُ كَالضَّرَمَةِ بِالنَّارِ

Anas ibn Malik reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “The Hour will not be established until time passes rapidly, such that a year is like a month, a month is like a week, a week is like a day, a day is like an hour, and an hour is like the flicker of a flame.”

10

عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ

افْعَلُوا الْخَيْرَ دَهْرَكُمْ

وَتَعَرَّضُوا لِنَفَحَاتِ رَحْمَةِ اللَّهِ فَإِنَّ لِلَّهِ نَفَحَاتٍ مِنْ رَحْمَتِهِ يُصِيبُ بِهَا مَنْ يَشَاءُ مِنْ عِبَادِهِ وَسَلُوا اللَّهَ أَنْ يَسْتُرَ عَوْرَاتِكُمْ وَأَنْ يُؤَمِّنَ رَوْعَاتِكُمْ

Anas ibn Malik reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Do good deeds in the time that you have and take advantage of the moments of gentle breeze from the mercy of Allah. Verily, Allah has moments of gentle breeze from his mercy that he sends upon whomever he wills among his servants. Ask Allah to cover your faults and protect you from your anxieties.”

Dua

عَنْ عُقْبَةَ بْنِ عَامِرٍ قَالَ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ يَوْمِ السَّوْءِ وَمِنْ لَيْلَةِ السَّوْءِ وَمِنْ سَاعَةِ السَّوْءِ وَمِنْ صَاحِبِ السَّوْءِ وَمِنْ جَارِ السَّوْءِ فِي دَارِ الْمُقَامَةِ

17/294 المعجم الكبير للطبراني

1299 المحدث الألباني خلاصة حكم المحدث حسن في صحيح الجامع

‘Uqbah ibn ‘Amir reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, would say, “O Allah, I seek refuge in You from an evil day, from an evil night, from an evil moment, from an evil companion, and from an evil neighbor in the final abode.”
