Al-Quran

وَاِنَّكَ لَعَلٰى خُلُقٍ عَظِيْمٍ (القلم:٤)

And you are surely on an excellent standard of character.

عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ: أَيْ: وَإِنَّكَ لَعَلَى دِينٍ عَظِيمٍ، وَهُوَ الْإِسْلَامُ

On the authority of Ibn Abbas: That is, you are following a great religion (25), which is Islam.

”أنْتَ عَلى الخُلُقِ الَّذِي أمَرَكَ اللَّهُ بِهِ في القُرْآنِ“.

أَيْ إِنَّكَ عَلَى طَبْعٍ كَرِيمٍ

حَقِيقَةُ الْخُلُقِ فِي اللُّغَةِ: هُوَ مَا يَأْخُذُ بِهِ الْإِنْسَانُ نَفْسَهُ مِنَ الْأَدَبِ يُسَمَّى خُلُقًا، لِأَنَّهُ يَصِيرُ كَالْخِلْقَةِ فِيهِ

 Related Hadith

عَنْ قَتَادَةَ: سُئلت عائشةُ عَنْ خُلُقِ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ. قَالَتِ:

كَانَ خُلُقُهُ الْقُرْآنَ، تَقُولُ كَمَا هُوَ فِي الْقُرْآنِ.

On the authority of Qatada: Aisha was asked about the character of the Messenger of Allah, may Allaah’s prayers and peace be upon him. She said: His character was the Qur'an, she says as it is in the Qur'an.

saying of Aisha may Allah be pleased with her,

عَنْ عُرْوَةَ عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا قَالَتْ

مَا كَانَ أَحْسَنُ خُلُقًا مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَا دَعَاهُ أَحَدٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِهِ وَلَا مِنْ أَهْلِهِ إِلَّا قَالَ لَبَّيْكَ

  وَلِذَلِكَ أَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ وَإِنَّكَ لَعَلَى خُلُقٍ عَظِيمٍ

‘Urwah reported: Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, said, “No one had better character than the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. No one from his companions or his family called upon him but that he would say:I am at your service. For this reason, Allah Almighty revealed the verse:Verily, you are upon great moral character.” (68:4)

عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ قَالَ: خَدَمْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَشْرَ سِنِينَ فَمَا قَالَ لِي أُفٍّ قَطُّ [وَمَا](٧) قَالَ لِشَيْءٍ صَنَعْتُهُ: لِمَ صَنَعْتَهُ؟ وَلَا لِشَيْءٍ تَرَكْتُهُ: لِمَ تَرَكْتَهُ؟

وَكَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ مِنْ أَحْسَنِ النَّاسِ خُلُقًا وَلَا مَسَسْتُ خَزًّا [قَطُّ]

(٨) وَلَا حَرِيرًا وَلَا شَيْئًا [كَانَ](٩) أَلْيَنَ مِنْ كَفِّ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَلَا شَمَمْتُ مِسْكًا وَلَا عِطْرًا كَانَ أَطْيَبَ مِنْ عَرَقِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ(١٠

عَنْ مَالِك أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ

On the authority of Anas bin Malik, he said: I served the Messenger of Allaah, may Allaah's prayers and peace be upon him, for ten years, and he never said to me, “UFF.” He said of something I did: Why did I do it? huh? Not because of something I left: Why did you leave it? And the Messenger of Allaah, may Allaah’s prayers and peace be upon him, was one of the best of people in morals, and I have never touched [earth]  nor silk, nor anything [that]  was softer than the palm of a head. By Allaah, may Allaah’s prayers and peace be upon him, I have never smelled musk or perfume that was more fragrant than the sweat of the Messenger of Allaah, may Allaah’s prayers and peace be upon him

عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ قَالَ:

"إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ لَمْ يَكُنْ فَاحِشًا وَلَا مُتَفَحِّشًا وَكَانَ يَقُولُ: "خِيَارُكُمْ أَحْسَنُكُمْ أَخْلَاقًا".

On the authority of Abdullah bin Omar, he said: “The Messenger of God, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, was not obscene or obscene, and he used to say: “The best among you is the one with the best morals.” ".

عَنْ أَنَسٍ قَالَ كُنْتُ أَمْشِي مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَعَلَيْهِ بُرْدٌ نَجْرَانِيٌّ غَلِيظُ الْحَاشِيَةِ فَأَدْرَكَهُ أَعْرَابِيٌّ فَجَبَذَهُ بِرِدَائِهِ جَبْذَةً شَدِيدَةً حَتَّى نَظَرْتُ إِلَى صَفْحَةِ عَاتِقِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَدْ أَثَّرَتْ بِهَا حَاشِيَةُ الْبُرْدِ مِنْ شِدَّةِ جَبْذَتِهِ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: يَا مُحَمَّدُ مُرْ لِي مِنْ مَالِ اللَّهِ الَّذِي عِنْدَكَ، فَالْتَفَتَ إِلَيْهِ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ ثُمَّ ضَحِكَ ثُمَّ أَمَرَ لَهُ بِعَطَاءٍ^(٢٠)

Anas (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:

I was walking with Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) who was wearing a Najrani cloak with a very thick border when a bedouin happened to meet him. He took hold of the side of his cloak and drew it violently. I noticed that the violence of jerk had bruised the neck of Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). The bedouin said: "O Muhammad! Give me out of Allah's wealth that you possess." Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) turned to him and smiled and directed that he should be given something.

عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الْجَدَلِيَّ قالسَأَلْتُ عَائِشَةَ عَنْ خُلُقِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَتْ

لَمْ يَكُنْ فَاحِشًا وَلَا مُتَفَحِّشًا وَلَا صَخَّابًا فِي الْأَسْوَاقِ وَلَا يَجْزِي بِالسَّيِّئَةِ السَّيِّئَةَ وَلَكِنْ يَعْفُو وَيَصْفَحُ

Abu Abdullah al-Khadali reported: I asked Aisha about the character of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. Aisha said, “The Prophet was not indecent, nor obscene, nor would he shout in the markets. He would not repay an evil deed with an evil deed, rather he would pardon and overlook.”

Jabir ibn Abdullah reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Verily, Allah has sent me with the perfection of noble morals and completion of good deeds.”

Mu’adh ibn Jabal reported: He intended to travel, so he said, “O Prophet of Allah, instruct me.” The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Worship Allah and associate nothing with Him.” Mu’adh said, “O Prophet of Allah, tell me more.” The Prophet said, “If you do a bad deed, then do a good deed.” Mu’adh said, “O Messenger of Allah, tell me more.” The Prophet said, “Have integrity and make your character excellent.”

مَا زَالَ يُوصِينِي جِبْرِيلُ بِالْجَارِ حَتَّى ظَنَنْتُ أَنَّهُ سَيُوَرِّثُهُ

Aisha reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Gabriel continued to instruct me to treat neighbors well until I thought he would make them my heirs.”

The Prophet said to us, “Do you think this woman would throw her child into the fire?” We said, “No, not if she was able to stop it.” The Prophet said, “Allah is more merciful to His servants than this mother is to her child.”

Umm Darda reported: Abu Darda, may Allah be pleased with them both, stood praying and weeping, saying, “O Allah, you have made my form excellent, so make my character excellent.” He continued until the morning and I said, “O Abu Darda, you did not supplicate for anything but good character!” Abu Darda said, “O Umm Darda, the Muslim servant will make his character excellent until he enters Paradise by his good character, and he will make his character wicked until he enters Hellfire by his evil character.”

Ali ibn Abi Talib reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “O Allah, You are the King. There is no God but You. You are my Lord, and I am Your servant. I have wronged myself and acknowledged my sins, so forgive all of my sins. Verily, none forgives sins but You. Guide me to the best of character, for none guides to it but You.”

Abu Umamah reported: I never prayed behind the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, while I was near to him but that I would hear him say at the end of every prayer, “O Allah, forgive all of my sins and mistakes. O Allah, refresh me and protect me and guide me to righteous deeds and character, for none can guide to its righteousness and divert its evil but You.”

Jabir ibn Abdullah reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Verily, my prayer, my rites, my life, and my death are for Allah the Lord of the worlds. He has no partner and with this I have been commanded and I am among the Muslims. O Allah, guide me to the best deeds and the best character, for no one guides to the best of them but you. Protect me from evil deeds and evil character, for no one protects from the evil of them but you.”

Ibn al-Jazari reported: Ibn al-Mubarak, may Allah have mercy on him, said, “I sought manners for thirty years and I sought sacred knowledge for twenty years. The righteous predecessors would seek manners first, then seek knowledge.”
