Al-Quran

وَالَّذِيْنَ اٰمَنُوْا مِنْۢ بَعْدُ وَهَاجَرُوْا وَجَاهَدُوْا مَعَكُمْ فَاُولٰۤىِٕكَ مِنْكُمْۗ وَاُولُوا الْاَرْحَامِ بَعْضُهُمْ اَوْلٰى بِبَعْضٍ فِيْ كِتٰبِ اللّٰهِ ۗاِنَّ اللّٰهَ بِكُلِّ شَيْءٍ عَلِيْمٌ ࣖ(الأنفال:٧٥)

Those who believed later on and emigrated and carried out Jihād alongwith you, then, they are joined with you. As for the womb-relatives, they are closer to one another according to the Book of Allah. Surely, Allah is aware of every thing.

المقصود بها البر و الإحسان

أما الأرحام إصطلاحاً فهي صلة الرحم في الإصطلاح الشرعي و لفظ ذو رحم يطلق على كل من تجمعه بك صلة قرابة و يُحرم النكاح منهم.

رحم محرم: و هم الأقارب الذين يحرم النكاح أو الزواج بينهما شرعاً و قانوناً

الدليل على هذا هو الآية القرآنية رقم 23 في سورة النساء: "حُرِّمَتْ عَلَيْكُمْ أُمَّهَاتُكُمْ وَبَنَاتُكُمْ وَأَخَوَاتُكُمْ وَعَمَّاتُكُمْ وَخَالاتُكُمْ وَبَنَاتُ الأَخِ وَبَنَاتُ الأُخْتِ وَأُمَّهَاتُكُمُ الَّلاتِي أَرْضَعْنَكُمْ وَأَخَوَاتُكُم مِّنَ الرَّضَاعَةِ وَأُمَّهَاتُ نِسَائِكُمْ وَرَبَائِبُكُمُ الَّلاتِي فِي حُجُورِكُم مِّن نِّسَائِكُمُ الَّلاتِي دَخَلْتُم بِهِنَّ فَإِن لَّمْ تَكُونُواْ دَخَلْتُم بِهِنَّ فَلاَ جُنَاحَ عَلَيْكُمْ وَحَلائِلُ أَبْنَائِكُمُ الَّذِينَ مِنْ أَصْلابِكُمْ وَأَن تَجْمَعُواْ بَيْنَ الأُخْتَيْنِ إِلاَّ مَا قَدْ سَلَفَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ كَانَ غَفُورًا رَّحِيمً

وَاٰتِ ذَا الْقُرْبٰى حَقَّهٗ وَالْمِسْكِيْنَ وَابْنَ السَّبِيْلِ وَلَا تُبَذِّرْ تَبْذِيْرًا

And give the relative his right, and [also] the poor and the traveler, and do not spend wastefully. (Al-Isra [17] : 26)

وَاتَّقُوا اللّٰهَ الَّذِيْ تَسَاۤءَلُوْنَ بِهٖ وَالْاَرْحَامَ ۗ اِنَّ اللّٰهَ كَانَ عَلَيْكُمْ رَقِيْبًا

Fear Allah in whose name you ask each other (for your rights), and fear (the violation of the rights of) the womb-relations. Surely, Allah is watchful over you.

(An-Nisa [4] : 1)

وَاتَّقُوا الْأَرْحَامَ أَنْ تَقْطَعُوهَا، وَلَكِنْ بِرُّوهَا وصِلُوها، قَالَهُ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ، وَمُجَاهِدٌ، وَعِكْرِمَةُ، وَالْحَسَنُ،

عَنْ أَنَسٍ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ

قَالَ فِي مَرَضِهِ أَرْحَامَكُمْ أَرْحَامَكُمْ

يَا عُثْمَانُ أَرَغِبْتَ عَنْ سُنَّتِي

قَالَ لَا وَاللَّهِ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ وَلَكِنْ سُنَّتَكَ أَطْلُبُ قَالَ فَإِنِّي أَنَامُ وَأُصَلِّي وَأَصُومُ وَأُفْطِرُ وَأَنْكِحُ النِّسَاءَ

فَاتَّقِ اللَّهَ يَا عُثْمَانُ فَإِنَّ لِأَهْلِكَ عَلَيْكَ حَقًّا وَإِنَّ لِضَيْفِكَ عَلَيْكَ حَقًّا وَإِنَّ لِنَفْسِكَ عَلَيْكَ حَقًّا

Aisha reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, sent for Uthman ibn Mazh’un and he came. The Prophet said, “O Uthman, do you not desire my practice?” Uthman said, “O Messenger of Allah, no by Allah. I seek your practice.” The Prophet said, “Verily, I sleep and I pray, I fast and I break my fast, and I marry women. Fear Allah, O Uthman, for your family has rights over you and your guest has rights over you. Verily, your own self has rights over you, so fast and break your fast, pray and sleep.”

فَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ فِي النِّسَاءِ فَإِنَّكُمْ أَخَذْتُمُوهُنَّ بِأَمَانِ اللَّهِ وَاسْتَحْلَلْتُمْ فُرُوجَهُنَّ بِكَلِمَةِ اللَّهِ

وَلَكُمْ عَلَيْهِنَّ أَنْ لَا يُوطِئْنَ فُرُشَكُمْ أَحَدًا تَكْرَهُونَهُ فَإِنْ فَعَلْنَ ذَلِكَ فَاضْرِبُوهُنَّ ضَرْبًا غَيْرَ مُبَرِّحٍ وَلَهُنَّ عَلَيْكُمْ رِزْقُهُنَّ وَكِسْوَتُهُنَّ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ

abir ibn Abdullah reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Fear Allah regarding women. Verily, you have taken them as a trust from Allah, and intercourse has been made lawful by the word of Allah. Your rights over them are that they do not let anyone in the house you dislike. If they do so, you may strike them without violence. Their rights over you are that you provide for them and clothe them in a reasonable manner.”

Grade: Sahih (authentic) according to Muslim

فَهَلْ عَسَيْتُمْ اِنْ تَوَلَّيْتُمْ اَنْ تُفْسِدُوْا فِى الْاَرْضِ وَتُقَطِّعُوْٓا اَرْحَامَكُمْ (محمد:٢٢)

So, (O hypocrites,) do you not apprehend that, in case you turn away (from Jihād ), you will spread disorder in the land and will sever your ties of kinship?

اُولٰۤىِٕكَ الَّذِيْنَ لَعَنَهُمُ اللّٰهُ فَاَصَمَّهُمْ وَاَعْمٰٓى اَبْصَارَهُمْ (محمد:٢٣)

Those are the ones whom Allah has cursed; so He has made them deaf, and made their eyes blind.

الَّذِيْنَ يَنْقُضُوْنَ عَهْدَ اللّٰهِ مِنْۢ بَعْدِ مِيْثَاقِهٖۖ وَيَقْطَعُوْنَ مَآ اَمَرَ اللّٰهُ بِهٖٓ اَنْ يُّوْصَلَ وَيُفْسِدُوْنَ فِى الْاَرْضِۗ اُولٰۤىِٕكَ هُمُ الْخٰسِرُوْنَ (البقرة:٢٧)

- those who break the Covenant of Allah after it has been made binding, and cut off the relations Allah has commanded to be joined, and spread disorder on the earth - it is these who are the losers.

 Related Hadith

عن أبي هريرة رضي الله تعالى عنه قال: قالرسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم:(

من كان يؤمن بالله واليومِ الآخر فليُكرِمْ ضيفَه،

 مَنْ كَانَ يُؤْمِنُ بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ فَلْيَصِلْ رَحِمَهُ

، ومن كان يؤمن بالله واليومِ الآخر

فَلْيَقُلْ خَيْرًا أَوْ لِيَصْمُتْ

)، رواه البخاري.

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "He who believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him show hospitality to his guest; and he who believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him maintain good relation with kins; and he who believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him speak good or remain silent."

[Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

^{Peaceful way to paradise} 

عنأبي يوسف عبد الله بن سلامرضي الله عنه قال: لما قدم النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم المدينة انجفل الناس قِـبَـله، وقيل: قد قدم رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم -ثلاثا-، فجئت في الناس لأنظر، فلما تبينت وجهه عرفت أن وجهه ليس بوجه كذاب، فكان أول شيء سمعته تكلم به أن قال: (

يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ أَفْشُوا السَّلاَمَ وَأَطْعِمُوا الطَّعَامَ وَصِلُوا الأَرْحَامَ وَصَلُّوا بِاللَّيْلِ وَالنَّاسُ نِيَامٌ تَدْخُلُوا الْجَنَّةَ بِسَلاَمٍ ‏ ‏.‏

تَعْبُدُ اللَّهَ لَا تُشْرِكُ بِهِ شَيْئًا وَتُقِيمُ الصَّلَاةَ وَتُؤْتِي الزَّكَاةَ وَتَصِلُ ذَا رَحِمِكَ

فَلَمَّا أَدْبَرَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ

إِنْ تَمَسَّكَ بِمَا أُمِرَ بِهِ دَخَلَ الْجَنَّةَ

Abu Ayyub reported: A man came to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and he said, “Tell me what I can do to enter Paradise and avoid Hellfire.” The Prophet said, “Worship Allah and do not associate anything with Him, perform prayer, give in charity, and keep good relations with your family.” When the man turned away, the Prophet said, “If he adheres to what he has been commanded, then he will enter Paradise.”

Real Family Ties 

عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ قَالَ قَالَ عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ

لَيْسَ الْوَصْلُ أَنْ تَصِلَ مَنْ وَصَلَكَ ذَلِكَ الْقِصَاصُ وَلَكِنَّ الْوَصْلَ أَنْ تَصِلَ مَنْ قَطَعَكَ

7467 شعب الإيمان للبيهقي السادس والخمسون من شعب الإيمان

‘Ikramah reported: Umar ibn Al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, said, “The one who reconciles is not the one who maintains relations with those who are good to him, for that is merely reciprocation. Rather, the one who reconciles is one who maintains relations with those who cut him off.”

Acception of dua upon Family Ties 

عن عبادة بن الصامت أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ

مَا عَلَى الْأَرْضِ مُسْلِمٌ يَدْعُو اللَّهَ بِدَعْوَةٍ إِلَّا آتَاهُ اللَّهُ إِيَّاهَا أَوْ صَرَفَ عَنْهُ مِنْ السُّوءِ مِثْلَهَا مَا لَمْ يَدْعُ بِإِثْمٍ أَوْ قَطِيعَةِ رَحِمٍ

فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ مِنْ الْقَوْمِ إِذًا نُكْثِرُ قَالَاللَّهُ أَكْثَرُ

حَقَّتْ مَحَبَّتِي لِلْمُتَحَابِّينَ فِيَّ وَحَقَّتْ مَحَبَّتِي لِلْمُتَوَاصِلِينَ فِيَّ

وَحَقَّتْ مَحَبَّتِي لِلْمُتَزَاوِرِينَ فِيَّ وَحَقَّتْ مَحَبَّتِي لِلْمُتَبَاذِلِينَ فِيَّ

When we saw him, we said, “If only this young man had given his youth and effort and strength in the path of Allah!” The Prophet heard our conversation, and he said, “Is there nothing in the path of Allah but fighting? Whoever strives for his parents is in the way of Allah. Whoever strives for his family is in the way of Allah. Whoever strives for himself to be independent is in the way of Allah. Whoever strives to gain many possessions for himself is in the way of Satan.”

فَقَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ لَوْ كَانَ هَذَا فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ

فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ

إِنْ كَانَ خَرَجَ يَسْعَى عَلَى وَلَدِهِ صِغَارًا فَهُوَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ

وَإِنْ كَانَ خَرَجَ يَسْعَى عَلَى أَبَوَيْنِ شَيْخَيْنِ كَبِيرَيْنِ فَهُوَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ

Ka’b ibn ‘Ujrah reported: A man passed by the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and the companions of the Messenger of Allah saw his endurance and vigor. They said, “O Messenger of Allah, if only this man was acting in the way of Allah!” The Prophet said, “If he goes out striving for his small children, he is in the way of Allah. If he goes out striving for his elderly parents, he is in the way of Allah. If he goes out striving for himself to abstain from wrongdoing, he is in the way of Allah. If he goes out vainly and boasting, he is in the way of Satan.”

The Prophet said, “O Uthman, do you not desire my practice?” Uthman said, “O Messenger of Allah, no by Allah. I seek your practice.” The Prophet said, “Verily, I sleep and I pray, I fast and I break my fast, and I marry women. Fear Allah, O Uthman, for your family has rights over you and your guest has rights over you. Verily, your own self has rights over you, so fast and break your fast, pray and sleep.”

فَأَتَى النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَذَكَرَ ذَلِكَ لَهُ

Abu Juhaifa reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, made a fellowship between Salman and Abu Darda. Salman visited Abu Darda and found his wife Umm Darda dressed in worn-out clothing. He asked her why she was like this. She said, “Your brother Abu Darda is not interested in this world.” Then, Abu Darda entered and prepared a meal for Salman. Salman asked Abu Darda to eat with him, but he said, “I am fasting.” Salman said, “I will not eat until you eat.” So Abu Darda ate with him. When the night set in, Abu Darda stood for prayer, but Salman asked him to sleep, and Abu Darda slept. After a while, Abu Darda arose again, but Salman asked him to sleep. When it was the last hours of the night, Salman asked him to get up, and they both offered night prayers. Salman said to him, “Verily, you have a duty to your Lord, you have a duty to your body, and you have a duty to your family, so you should give each one its rights.” Abu Darda came to the Prophet and told him what had happened. The Prophet said, “Salman spoke the truth.”

وَمَهْمَا أَنْفَقْتَ فَهُوَ لَكَ صَدَقَةٌ حَتَّى اللُّقْمَةَ تَرْفَعُهَا فِي فِي امْرَأَتِكَ

Sa’d reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, visited me while I was ill in Mecca. I said, “I have some wealth. May I donate all of it?” The Prophet said, “No.” I said, “Half of it?” The Prophet said, “No.” I said, “A third of it?” The Prophet said, “Yes a third, but this is still too much. That you leave your inheritors wealthy is better than leaving them dependent, begging for what people have. Whatever you spend on them is charity for you, even the morsel you feed to your wife.”

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Verily, Allah made the creation and when He finished, the womb said: In this place, I seek refuge in you from those who sever me. Allah said: Are you not pleased that I keep good relations with those who are good to you and I will cut off whoever severs relations with you? The womb said: Yes, my Lord. Allah said: Thus, you will have it.” Then, the Prophet said, “Recite the verse if you wish: Will you then, if you were given authority, spread corruption in the land and sever your family ties?” (47:22)

Anas reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Verily, the womb has an iron hook attached firmly to the Throne, speaking with a penetrating tongue: O Allah, keep relations with whoever keeps relations with me, and sever relations with whoever severs them with me. Allah Almighty says: I am the Gracious, the Merciful. I derived the womb from My name. Whoever keeps relations with it, I keep relations with him. Whoever cuts off relations with it, I cut off relations with him.”

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “The gates of Paradise are opened on Monday and Thursday. Allah forgives every servant who does not associate anything with Him, except a man with enmity between himself and his brother. It will be said: Delay these two until they reconcile, delay these two until they reconcile, delay these two until they reconcile.”

Qatadah reported: A man of Khath’am came to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and he said, “Are you the one who imagines he is the Messenger of Allah?” The Prophet said, “Yes.” The man said, “O Messenger of Allah, which deeds are most beloved to Allah?” The Prophet said, “Faith in Allah.” The man said, “Then what?” The Prophet said, “To maintain family relationships.” The man said, “O Messenger of Allah, which deeds are most hateful to Allah?” The Prophet said, “To associate idols with Allah.” The man said, “Then what?” The Prophet said, “To sever family relationships.” The man said, “Then what?” The Prophet said, “To enjoin evil and forbid good.”

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Fulfilling the trust and maintaining family ties will be sent to stand on the sides of the bridge over Hell, left and right, then the first of you will pass over it like lightning.” I said, “May my father and mother be ransomed for you, what passes like lightning?” The Prophet said, “Have you not seen how lightning comes and goes like the blink of an eye? Then, they will pass like the wind, then like a bird, then like a strong man running, by the measure of their deeds. Your Prophet will stand over the bridge, saying, ‘O Lord, save them, save them,’ until the deeds of the servants are so weak such that a man can only cross it by crawling.”

Abdullah said, “Return to your family and leave them with enough to sustain themselves, for I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say:It is enough sin for a man to neglect those under his care.”

He instructed me not to fear the blame of the blamer in the matter of Allah. He instructed me to speak the truth even if it is bitter. He instructed me to increase in declaring there is no movement or might but in Allah, for it is a treasure among the treasures of Paradise.

Abdur Rahman ibn Samurah reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, came out to us and he said, “Verily, I saw something wondrous last night. I saw a man of my nation as angels were holding him back, and his ablution came to save him from that. I saw a man of my nation surrounded by devils, and the remembrance of Allah came to free him from them. I saw a man of my nation suffering from extreme thirst, and his fasting in Ramadan came to give him drink. I saw a man of my nation with darkness before him, darkness behind him, darkness to his right, darkness to his left, darkness above him, and darkness below him, and his pilgrimages came to bring him out of darkness. I saw a man of my nation to whom the angel of death came to take his soul, and his righteousness to his parents came and turned the angel back. I saw a man of my nation to whom the believers would not speak, and his maintenance of family ties came and it said, ‘Verily, he is one who has maintained family ties, so speak to him,’ and he became one of them. I saw a man of my nation come to people sitting in circles and every circle he came to drove him away, and his ritual bath from major impurity led him by the hand and seated him next to them. I saw a man of my nation shielding his face from the heat of the Hellfire, and his charity came to give him shade and cover his face. I saw a man of my nation to whom the angels of punishment came, and his enjoining good and forbidding evil came to save him from that. I saw a man of my nation falling into the Hellfire, and the tears which he shed for reverence of Allah came to pull him out of the Fire. I saw a man of my nation whose scroll fell into his left hand, and his fear of Allah came to place his scroll in his right hand. I saw a man of my nation swaying in the wind like a palm tree, and his good thoughts of Allah came to calm his shaking. I saw a man of my nation crawling across the bridge over Hell, at times kneeling, at times clinging to it, and his blessings over me came to take him by the hand and stand him up upon the bridge until he passed over it. I saw a man of my nation who was stopped at the gates of Paradise and every gate was locked for him, and his testimony that there is no God but Allah came to take him by the hand and lead him into Paradise.”

Allah will be with you as a supporter as long as you remain like so.”
